Brown Trout Fly Fishing
Interested in brown trout? The Mad River and Brookville Tailwaters offers opportunities for average-to-trophy-sized trout year round. Peak times are usually in the spring and fall, while the winter offers solitude and unpressured fish. The Mad River is a country-setting spring creek with 30+ miles of brown trout fishing located from West Liberty to Springfield, Ohio. This is one of Dayton’s local gems, a pure limestone creek and the only Ohio stream to successfully hold brown trout. With its small mountain creek style headwaters in Zanesfield to the larger streamer section around Springfield, the Mad River offers angler many different techniques to fish for browns.
The Brookville Tailwaters, located in Brookville Indiana, is a 2-mile stretch stocked with rainbow and brown trout from the dam to the confluence of the Whitewater River. Dry, nymph, and streamer fishing are all important tactics depending on the season and water flows of each of these streams. As the closest tailwater with trout, Brookville has become very popular for local anglers seeking browns and rainbows.
Smallmouth, Carp, and Largemouth Fly Fishing
If you have never been fly fishing for smallmouth bass, then you’re in for a treat, as southwestern Ohio has great opportunities for you. The Stillwater, the lower Mad River, and the Little Miami offer some of the best smallmouth fishing around this area. Dayton is situated around one of the largest aquifers in the nation. With 5 rivers in the region, there are plenty of angler opportunities within driving distance for most anglers. The smallmouth bite in this region usually starts in late spring and lasts through the fall. The fishing really heats up during the hottest days of summer. Topwater and streamer patterns are all proven techniques.
